Tenants Tackle Bedbugs, Mold and ‘Condozilla’

In Washington, D.C., many neighborhoods have seen their affordable housing shrink with gentrification. Even after the condo boom has faded, some low-income tenants say landlords either want them out, or are reluctant to maintain rent-controlled buildings.
Tenants at The Norwood building in Northwest D.C. decided to form a cooperative to try and buy their building from their landlord. Silvia Salazar, of the Norwood Tenant’s Association and Linda Leeks of Empower DC lead a tour of the building, where residents share their experiences of organizing their diverse community.
