10 years after U.S. troops invaded, Afghanistan continues to be plagued by attacks and insecurity. Still, the U.S. plans to bring home some 30,000 troops in the next year. When international troops do leave, there will be a number of armed groups left behind.

Journalist Anand Gopal has written about Afghanistan for The Wall Street Journal, Foreign Policy, and the Christian Science Monitor. He shares his experiences of living with armed groups—from the US military, to the Taliban, to militia groups trained by the US.
