In the United States and Europe, many women are drawn to the bronzing effect of tanning beds, but in other places, some people desire just the opposite: lighter skin. In parts of India and Africa, women can purchase products to lighten their skin with harsh chemicals.

But, as Michelle Betz reports from Uganda, bleaching comes at a heavy cost. Creams with steroids can lead to thinning skin, ulcers, and infections. Doctors say it can even kill you.
